Abstract: Our analysis compares full fuel cycles with both conventional and electric power trains (including fuels cells) in terms of energy and emission balances. Particular emphasis is placed on power trains with fuel cells and their onboard electricity generation on the basis of methanol and gasoline. The basic engineering calculations focus on optimizing the energy management of the fuel processing unit and the electricity generation unit as components of the power train. The balances also include life cycle analyses in terms of primary energy consumption and emissions including fuel cycles. Material balances for production processes are not taken into account.
